The life of Marilyn Owen Dorsey will be remembered and celebrated 12:00noon, Friday, May 4, 2018 at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler, Kentucky. Her death early Wednesday morning came a few weeks after celebrating her 90th birthday with family and friends.
The daughter of the late Homer and Mary (Ducker) Owen, she was also preceded in death by her beloved husband Roy Hancock Dorsey, Sr. and brothers Homer Owen III and Howard Owen and her dear friend Raymond Jeffries.
She is survived by her son Roy H. Dorsey, Jr., his wife Tish, of Fort Thomas, KY; her son Owen Earle Dorsey, his wife and Marilyn’s daughter-in-love, Linda Greenwood of St. Simons Island, GA. She is also survived by her two sisters, Mrs. Myra Owen Crowley (J.C.) and Mrs. Kathleen Owen Simmons (Harold), six grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, eleven nieces/nephews, twenty-two great-nieces/nephews and one great, great niece.
An undergraduate of Kentucky Wesleyan College and M.Ed. graduate of Western Kentucky University, Mrs. Dorsey was a lifetime advocate of early-childhood development. Her love for teaching primary and remedial school reading spanned over fifty years. As part of her Christian ministry, she volunteered as a Reading Specialist for female inmates.
Her decades of dedicated active lay service in the United Methodist Church included children and youth counselor, Sunday School teacher, United Methodist Women’s Leader, adult choir and Administrative Board. She was also a member of the Honorable Order of the Kentucky Colonels. However, it was her love of family that truly defined her.
Following the service, Interment will be in Hardin Memorial Park Cemetery, Elizabethtown, KY at 4:00pm. Memorials, if desired, are suggested to Memorial United Methodist Church, 631 N. Miles Street, Elizabethtown, KY 42701 or to the animal rescue of one’s choice.
